I want to start this post off by commending 3 Floyds for FINALLY hiring someone that actually knows what they are doing to arrange events of this scale. The people responsible for planning and executing this event really knew what they were doing! This has been my seventh Dark Lord Day, and in my opinion, the best yet. Every year since I’ve attended, the event seems to grow, this year was no exception. The only difference is that even though the crowd was larger than ever, the event was much better planned, layout of the grounds was much better with several beer tents set up as well as a covered area with picnic benches for people looking to trade beers or just take a break in the shade. A stage had been set up outside (as opposed to inside the brewery) Which was fantastic because we were able to sit on the lawn before standing in that line to grab our bottles. We got there around 1PM and spent the time walking around to the several beer tents. They had DarkLord on tap, as well as various other 3 Floyds beers, like Zombie Dust, Jinx Proof, Gumballhead, and there were several guest breweries set up in the tents as well. We were pleasantly suprised to see Indy’s Flat 12 on tap
So after meandering around the grounds, sipping on several beers, it was time to do the unavoidable, and get into the bottle line. This year, it was a 3 per person allotment at $15, with a “chance” to get The Golden Ticket-and spend some more coin on Barrel Aged variants-Port, Moscatel, Bourbon BBL w/Chili (we picked this one) and Bourbon Vanilla.
Despite being better organized, the wait in line was as long as ever. When we finally reached the end of it, where it snakes around a cul-de-sac, we realized some things at Dark Lord Day will just never change, but frankly are worth it. And if you ever think you are in a long line somewhere I just want you to remember this for a point of reference, as most people will never stand in a line at will for hours on end like this. We were in Group D-which was supposed to be from 4-6PM. We lined up at 3:30 and did not have our Dark Lord in hand ’till close to 8PM. After getting our bottles,we decided to have one more for the road. (Do keep in mind we had pre-arranged transportation, as I hope others did the same, as no one should drink beer that strong and ever get behind the wheel) We saw several grown men that were clearly not forewarned of Dark Lord’s Potency, at 15% ABV.
